Prof. B.A. Thomas

Professor Barry A. Thomas FLS
My academic career started with a degree in Botany at the
University of Sheffield, followed by postgraduate
research on Carboniferous arborescent lycophytes
(Lepidodendron etc) at Reading University.
Following two years as the Lord Adams Fellow in the
University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne I took up a lecturing
post at the University of London Goldsmiths' College in
1968. After becoming Head of Department and Dean of the
Faculty, I moved to Cardiff in 1985 to become Keeper of
the Botany Department at the National Museum of Wales. In
1996 I retired early from the Museum and moved to
Lampeter and then finally to Aberystwyth.
I have been a member of the BIGC since it started and
Treasurer since 1996. I have published 22 books and over
100 scientific papers, dealing with palaeobotany,
pteridophytes, Upper Carboniferous stratigraphy and
geoconservation.
