British Institute for Geological Conservation Committee:
Dr T.A. Hose, PGCE, MILAM, FGS

Tom Hose has extensive experience as a field naturalist and geologist, conservationist, environmental educationalist and in geological and biological recording, monitoring and conservation schemes. Initially an earth scientist (London University) and a Fellow of the Geological Society, Tom has worked in both schools (as a head of geology) and museums (in natural science curatorial, educational and senior management posts). He is now a university principal lecturer in tourism and heritage. Within museums, he lectured and published on natural history collections and education matters, gaining an MA in Museum and Gallery administration (City University) with a dissertation on the history of museum education.

His doctoral thesis (University of Birmingham) was the first submission anywhere on 'geotourism' - a field of study he pioneered and promoted after becoming aware, in the mid-1980s, of the loss of British geosites because their significance was clearly unrecognised outside of the discipline. In developing the geotourism, he undertook research in the UK, Europe and the USA. An international authority on geotourism, he regularly contributes to conferences in the UK and Europe. He has authored geotourism chapters for three Geological Society of London and several geoconservation and tourism books, as well as numerous articles. Tom is on the Executive Committee of UKRIGS. In his spare time he is much involved, drawing upon his knowledge of natural history and geology to supplement his field-craft skills, in the provision of outdoor learning experiences for young people.
